About 4-H Camp Wabasso 

4-H Camp Wabasso is a residential summer camp located in Jefferson County just outside of Redwood, NY. This 177-acre facility is situated along 2/3 of a mile of pristine waterfront on Millsite Lake. Youth ages 6-16 will find exciting opportunities during the six weeks of residential camp or during one of our other programs. Residential camps are six days, five nights for ages 8-16. Cloverbud camps are three days, two nights for ages 6-8.

We’re looking for responsible, enthusiastic, and spirited individuals who can serve as role models and mentors at camp. Working at 4-H Camp Wabasso is a beneficial experience. You will be contributing to many wonderful memories for our campers and helping our campers build valuable life skills, while also having the best summer ever and growing your own skills!  

2023 Camping Season 

Our program will run from July 2 - August 11 with the weeks of June 19 - June 23 and June 26 - June 30 being required for staff training. We understand many of our staff are young and may not be available for all of staff training due to school requirements, and that is okay! We have additional training opportunities for staff unable to attend part of training!

Program Director

Our Program Director also acts as a jack of all trades, and we hope to get this person certified in each program area we offer at 4-H Camp Wabasso (archery, ropes, waterfront, etc.). Duties include scheduling counselor staff, monitoring class and equipment logs, providing support to counselors with their classes, and scheduling all-camp and evening programs. This is a senior staff position, overnight accommodations and meals are provided. This position does not include regular cabin responsibilities.

Waterfront Director

Our Waterfront Director supervises and offers continual in-service training to our lifeguarding and boating staff on our beautiful waterfront beach on Millsite Lake. Waterfront programming includes swimming, water games, canoeing/kayaking, and paddle boarding. Director must have current waterfront lifeguarding certification, waterfront safety instructor certification, lifeguard management certification, and be 21+ (camp can assist with recertifications if necessary). Duties also include helping our leadership team with the wider camp program. This is a senior staff position, overnight accommodations and meals are provided. This position does not include regular cabin duties.

Ropes Coordinator

The Ropes Coordinator is responsible for training and supervising staff in team building initiatives and on their duties on the low and high ropes course. Experience facilitating teambuilding and previous ropes course work is required. Ropes course training take place prior to staff training, and is required to fulfill this position. Duties also include leading teambuilding initiatives, low elements, high elements, and helping our leadership team with the wider camp program. This is a 24/7 on-site position, Sunday-Friday while camp is in session, with sleeping quarters provided in cabins with youth. Meals provided.

Camp Counselor

Camp counselors live, eat, play, dance, sing and supervise campers (ages 6-16) throughout the summer. They keep close tabs on bunk cleanliness, campers’ personal hygiene, and mealtime habits to ensure the health and happiness of the kids in their care. They provide fun, hands-on activities throughout the day. Camp counselors can have a profound impact on the campers they lead. It is a position that demands an incredible responsibility and care, and it is also one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have! Prior experience working with children is a plus! This is a 24/7 on-site position, Sunday-Friday while camp is in session, with sleeping quarters provided in cabins with youth. Meals provided. (Age 17 junior counselor, Age 18+ senior counselor)

Lifeguard/Camp Counselor

Our waterfront Lifeguards/Camp Counselors provide lakefront lifeguarding and other duties as assigned by the Waterfront Director. Lifeguards help with supervision, teaching, guidance, and motivation to all campers at the waterfront activities. Our waterfront staff also teach campers canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boarding! Safety is our primary concern with all waterfront activities. Other responsibilities include living in the cabins with campers and assisting other counselor staff with the responsibility for the general health and safety of campers in the cabin and around camp. Current waterfront lifeguarding and CPR PRO certification is required (please note CPR PRO must be renewed every year. Camp can assist with certifications/recertifications if necessary) This is a 24/7 on-site position, Sunday-Friday while camp is in session, with sleeping quarters provided in cabins with youth. Meals provided. (Age 16-17 lifeguard/junior counselor, Age 18+ lifeguard/senior counselor)

Camp Nurse

This is a 24/7 on-site position, Sunday-Friday while camp is in session, with sleeping quarters provided in the infirmary. Supervise and enforce relevant NYS Department of Health and American Camp Association standards. Work with the camp director and all staff to ensure a safe and healthy camp for all. Review health forms, organize medications, and administer medications to campers based on doctors’ orders. Must be a New York State licensed LPN, RN, or other NYS license acceptable by NYS Department of Health. Meals are provided.

Camp Cook

The Camp Cook serves as the food service manager for 4-H Camp Wabasso, directing all kitchen functions, planning menus, ordering food and supplies, and coordinating three balanced meals and one snack each day camp is in session. The Camp Cook must follow all 4-H, USDA, and NYS DOH guidelines in performing position duties. This position could be a 24/7, Sunday-Friday position overseeing all meals, or it could be split between two people where one would oversee breakfast and lunch, and the other would oversee dinners. Overnight accommodations can be provided upon request.

Kitchen Assistant/Counselor 

Kitchen staff are crucial to the daily running of camp! Kitchen assistant/counselors will assist the camp cook with preparation of meals. Multiple kitchen assistant/counselors will be hired, and the meal responsibilities will be split among those hired. Outside of meal preparation, this position will act as a camp counselor, helping other counselor staff in the responsibility for the general health and safety of campers around camp and in the cabin. This is a 24/7 on-site position, Sunday-Friday while camp is in session, with sleeping quarters provided in cabins with youth. Meals provided. 

Kitchen Assistant 

Kitchen staff are crucial to the daily running of camp! If being a camp counselor isn’t what you are looking for, but you would like experience working in a kitchen, consider applying for the kitchen assistant position! This position will help the Camp Cook with all three meals and a snack each day: helping with the prep-work, helping to serve, and helping with cleanup. This position would not have cabin responsibilities, but if overnight accommodations are requested, the accommodations may be in a cabin with other counselors and youth.
