Dear Camp Families,
We hope this letter finds you and your loved ones well during this challenging time.
Among the many difficult decisions we have had to face together, today we share one that is especially difficult. It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that, after a very thorough review, we have decided to close our residential and day camp programs at 4-H Camp Wabasso this summer.
This decision was not made lightly. We have spent the last 2.5 months carefully following and evaluating the evolving COVID-19 situation. We have read through the federal government and CDC reopening guidelines, we’ve sat in on many webinars put out by the American Camping Association, and we have read through the guidelines for opening residential and day camps put out by the American Camping Association. We have also been in regular communication with the Jefferson County Department of Public Health and the New York State Department of Health.
After considering all of the information provided to date, and considering the risk that COVID-19 still poses, we have decided that the risk is too high for our campers, camper families, and camp staff to open camp for a typical camp season. We also would not be able to give campers the full camp experience while following the guidelines to keep campers and camp staff safe.
For those of you that have paid for camp already, you will be issued a full refund to include the $100 non-refundable deposit and any donations that you may have made to the 2020 camp scholarship fund. You do not need to do anything to receive this refund. If you paid with a credit or debit card on bunk1, you will receive a credit to your account in the amount paid; you will receive this by the end of May. If you paid with cash or check, you will receive a check from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County; you will receive this in the mail by the end of May.
Currently we are planning other programming options for campers. These options could include virtual camp programming, virtual campfires with camp songs and camp stories, camp programming broadcasted through WPBS kids, and/or possible small group activities in person at 4-H Camp Wabasso later in the summer. We will send you information about these programming options as soon as we have finalized details. Another avenue for information is ccejefferson.org.
Please know that we are truly saddened to not have typical camp this summer. We will miss all of our campers. We hope to see you and your camper for our 2021 camp season!
Kevin Jordan, Stephanie Graf, Sabrina DeRue, Lisa Vaughn, and the 4-H Camp Wabasso Team
